I said I wanted to be at 15,000 words by Friday of last week. Well, I’m there now! Actually that’s a lie, but I’m damn close!
It turns out that even when you don’t have a real job, and even when writing a book is your number one priority, there are still plenty of things that can stop you from getting as much done as you want. In addition to the usual culprits of laziness and procrastination, I’ve had my writing hours eaten up in myriad other ways. I’ve spent time in November: giving poker lessons, leading a teen writing workshop, conducting an alumni interview for my alma mater, writing a report for said interview, reviewing a friend’s novel, playing a charity poker tournament, attending two concerts, watching football, watching poker (congrats Ryan Riess!), hosting house guests, seeing friends, following the chess tournament, writing these blog posts, reading, and spending time with my family. I know I should cut back on some of these things, but I don’t want to cut back on most of them. I feel I can be a productive and prolific writer while still maintaining my current lifestyle. If I can only finish NanoWrimo without too much stress, I’ll end up proving myself right.
To that end, new goal! I will get on pace by the end of the week–that means 25,000 words by Friday, when we reach the halfway point. I’m attending two workshops and seeing two shows this week, but I still remain confident. Let’s get it done!
How are the other Nano people out there doing?
